the lying little shepherd

Once upon a time there was a shepherd boy who was tending his flock on the top of a hill. He was very bored and to amuse himself he thought of playing a joke on the villagers. After taking a deep breath, the shepherd boy cried out:

-Wolf, wolf! There is a wolf chasing the sheep.
The villagers came running to help the shepherd boy and chase the wolf away. But when they reached the top of the hill, they found no wolf. The shepherd boy laughed when he saw their angry faces.
-Don't cry wolf, when there is no wolf," said the villagers, and they angrily went down the hill.
After a few hours, the shepherd boy cried out again:
-Wolf, wolf! The wolf is chasing the sheep.
The villagers again ran to his aid, but when they saw that there was no wolf they told the shepherd boy sternly:
-Don't cry wolf when there is no wolf, do it when a wolf is actually chasing the sheep.
But the shepherd boy was still rolling with laughter as he watched the villagers go down the hill once more.
Later, the shepherd boy saw a wolf near his flock. Frightened, he shouted as loud as he could:
-Wolf, wolf! The wolf is chasing the sheep.
But the villagers thought he was trying to trick them again, and this time they did not come to his aid. The shepherd boy cried inconsolably as he watched the wolf flee with all his sheep.
At dusk, the shepherd boy returned to the village and told everyone:

-The wolf appeared on the hill and escaped with all my sheep. Why didn't you want to help me?

Then the villagers replied:

-We would have helped you, just as we did before; but no one believes a liar even when he tells the truth.
